The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella DQ’s

If you decided to read this novella with me, feel free to answer the questions below.

  1. What was your initial thoughts before reading on why this particular character was chosen for a novella. Why Bree? Why not Riley, who is technically more “involved” with the Cullens?
  2. In the beginning of the story, what do you think of Bree and her personality?
  3. Why do you think Stephenie Meyers wrote a novel coming from a newborns perspective?
  4. Knowing Bree has all of two or three lines in Eclipse, and not even four in the movie, how did you feel about her after reading her tale. Do you feel differently?
  5. What do you think of the her growing friendship with Diego?
  6. Why did Fred not use his “powers” on Bree like he did the others?
  7. Why do you think Diego “met the sun” as they say in True Blood and suffered his final death?
  8. Were you surprised to know that the Volturi knew what the newborns were planning? In Eclipse when Edward said to Jane “too bad you didn’t get to do what you came here for” did you read it like he knew?
  9. Did you find that you wanted to keep Bree alive even though you knew the outcome of Eclipse?
  10. Who else would you like to see Stephenie Meyers explore that spawned from the Twilight Saga?

Dark Lover by J. R. Ward DQ

First, Aukele and I would like to apologize for not posting these sooner. I did not get a chance to read this book and I don't believe she did either. If you take your daily routine and completely turn it upside down, that has basically become my life since deciding to move. Slowly, things are coming back to whatever "normal" was, but until then - posts are gonna be a bit scattered. Sorry for that.

On a sidenote, after reading the questions Aukele found on this book, I am going to be running back to the bookstore - or at least to get it as an audiobook so I find out what it's all about!

-------------------------------------------------------

What do you think of Ward's twist to the vampire mythos?

Does Ward's created language give credence to her twist on the vampire legend or does it trivialize it for you?

What is the most believable medical aspect of Havers's research on vampires? What's the least believable?

In a "Dark Lover" movie or TV series, who would you like to see cast as Wrath? What about the other Brothers?

Which of the Brothers do you think you would get along the easiest with and why?

What's your opinion of the lessers being the bad guys? Are they bad enough?

Do you think that impotence is a fair price to pay for eternal life, increased strength and stamina, and a lack of a need for sleep? What would you give up?

Compare and contrast Wrath and Mr. X as leaders of their respective groups.

Do you think that the Brothers' attitudes toward women are outdated and archaic, or would you like to be treated like that in a relationship?

The Host: DQ #4

NOTE: I apologize for my absence. I have not been here because I have been packing and moving. I do apologize for those of you I left hanging. If you have finished the book, please feel free to answer the questions below regarding the remainder of the novel.

Please use the remaining portion of the novel to answer your thoughts on these questions.

  1. Ian tries to kill Wanderer. Do you think he would have done this had Jeb not showed up?
  2. Why do you think nobody told Jamie about Melanie?  Do you agree that it was for his protection?
  3. Jared is being a Class-A jerk when he eats in front of Wanderer and refuses her a pillow. Why do you think he is doing this to her?
  4. What do you think caused Ian to move from wanting to kill Wanderer to feeling bad for hurting her?
  5. Jamie is eager to hang out with Wanderer even after he learns her real identity. Why do you think that is?
  6. What do you think of the human name Wanda for Wanderer?
  7. Were you interested in the history of Wanda's adventures of the nine worlds?
  8. Why is Jamie confused when Wanda tells him people come to see her while she sleeps but they see  Jared/Doc/Jeb/whoever is guarding her and leave?
  9. Ian turns from the guy in the beginning to this guy that is really diggin' Wanda. S.M. said that when she wrote him she didn't see him as a big character and as she wrote, he made himself who we see (awesome, btw - happened to me as I wrote my first novel). What caused him to change?
  10. Why do you think Wanda/Wanderer finally got the courage to tell Jared off for calling her "it?"
  11. What did you think about the soccer game? Was it a good way to show life continued with some normalcy or did you find it extra info that wasn't needed in this 752,365 page novel?
  12. What do you think really happened to Jamie when he returns injured?
  13. What are your thoughts on the names of the medicines given to Wanderer when she goes to the hospital? Cute or ridiculously childish and simplistic?
  14. Were you surprised when Wanderer told everyone how to remove a soul?
  15. How strange is it that Kyle's behavior changes towards souls when Jodi/Sunny come into the caves?
  16. How did you feel after discovering Wanda didn't have to sacrifice herself b/c everyone liked her enough to find her a new host?
  17. What did you think of the description of Ian caring for the cryotank while they searched for the perfect body?
  18. How did you feel about the ending when the group goes out on a raid and discovers another group that has someone with them like Wanda?
  19. When the book ended did you like it? Did it feel complete? Was the story finished in your mind? According to S.M. this novel was made to be a stand-alone.
Sorry for the long questions post but I wanted to wrap it up quickly in time for the next book!

Thanks for reading!
xoxo

The Host: DQ #3

Use Chapters 6-15 to answer the following questions!

Wanderer viewed the mass suicide of the Sea Weeds as a tragedy and Melanie viewed it as admirable. What does this say about each of their characters?

We are never given the Seeker's name. Why do you think Meyer chooses to leave this character unnamed? Do you think it is effective?

Melanie says, "No one’s young anymore. Anyone who’s survived this long is ancient.” Why does she claim this?

Melanie shows Wanderer memories of Jared to distract her. Does it seem like Wanderer is developing her own feelings for Jared or are these emotions she is feeling towards him all from Melanie?

What would you bring as your last sort of food for a trip into the desert? (ie. Wanderer wanted doughnuts and chips)

While struggling through the desert, Wanderer allows Melanie to take over more and more. Why do you think she does this?

Wanderer doesn't refer to her body, thoughts, or memories as hers or mine any longer. She uses we and ours. What does this say about Wanderer's relationship with Melanie as the story progresses?

Why do you think Uncle Jeb tells Wanderer that Jared and Jamie never made it to the caves?

What do you think of Jared hitting Melanie/Wanderer?

Melanie realizes that Wanderer has true feelings for Jared. Feelings that were not fostered by Melanie. This upsets both of them. Do you think Melanie needs to be jealous over an alien that looks like a silver worm in it's human form?

Thoughts on the book up to now...

The Host: DQ #2

After reading the first five chapters of The Host, answer the following questions...

Melanie was on the verge of being caught by the alien race, so she attempted suicide. Do you think you would do the same in her scenario? Die free or live a slave?

If the Souls are suppose to be so peaceful and non-fighting, why do you think the Healer and the Seeker where arguing?

Do you think the souls are more human in their characteristics than they think they are? Why or why not?

Do you like the name the soul goes by and do you think souls should take new names on new planets?

What is so important about the soul Racing Song who changed his name to Kevin?

Why is the mental fight between Melanie and Wanderer so important when Wanderer almost emails the Seeker to say the email she sent was about a dream?

Why do you think Wanderer has a harder time controlling Melanie when she is overcome with emotions?

What job would you take if you were a soul? Comforter, Healer, or a Seeker?

Most important question: WHAT DO YOU THINK SO FAR? Easy to read or hard??

The Host: DQ #1

After reading the Prologue what do you think?

What did you think by this introductory chapter?

What is your initial impression of the Healers, Seekers, and soul's in general?

What do you this is going to happen to the soul?

Why do you think they put this soul in this host's body?

In this introductory chapter were you hooked? Confused?

The Last Song: Chapter 6 - Chapter 22

This is a pretty decent chunk of the book, but I think a lot of good stuff happens during this part. A lot of feelings are expressed and I see the characters mature very quickly. Discussion questions:

  1. Why does Steve build a wall around the piano?
  2. Why does Will fall for Ronnie?
  3. Why does Ronnie fall for Will?
  4. Who causes tension between Will and Ronnie as their friendship/relationship starts to blossom?
  5. How can you characterize Blaze's relationship with Marcus?
  6. What is Steve and Jonah working on in the shed all summer?
  7. What does Ronnie fight so hard to protect that brings her closer to Will?
  8. What is your reaction to the book up to this point?

  4. Who do you see when Ronnie is described?
  5. Seeing that Ronnie is being a rebellious teenager - what do you think caused this?
  6. Were you ever rebellious or had/have rebellious teenagers to deal with?
