The Last Song: Chapter 6 - Chapter 22

This is a pretty decent chunk of the book, but I think a lot of good stuff happens during this part. A lot of feelings are expressed and I see the characters mature very quickly. Discussion questions:

  1. Why does Steve build a wall around the piano?
  2. Why does Will fall for Ronnie?
  3. Why does Ronnie fall for Will?
  4. Who causes tension between Will and Ronnie as their friendship/relationship starts to blossom?
  5. How can you characterize Blaze's relationship with Marcus?
  6. What is Steve and Jonah working on in the shed all summer?
  7. What does Ronnie fight so hard to protect that brings her closer to Will?
  8. What is your reaction to the book up to this point?

1. Why does Steve build a wall around the piano?
Ronnie makes a big deal about him playing the piano. She whines about how she hates it and doesn't even want to see it.

2. Why does Will fall for Ronnie?
Not only is Ronnie different from everyone around there, she says what she feels. She doesn't know him so she could care less what he thinks. She is not out to impress him and that makes it very easy for him to fall for her.

3. Why does Ronnie fall for Will?
He was attractive and didn't fit into the mold of people that lived in this beach town. He shared the same interests as her, and through his kindness managed to get her to fall for him.

4. Who causes tension between Will and Ronnie as their friendship/relationship starts to blossom?
His stupid ex-girlfriend.

5. How can you characterize Blaze's relationship with Marcus?
Disturbing. After being in the mind of Marcus, I feel like I need a bottle of bleach to clean my thoughts. He was a user and the epitome of a scumbag psycho. We never learn much about his family (and if we did I skimmed it too quick to remember), but I wouldn't be surprised if he was abused.

6. What is Steve and Jonah working on in the shed all summer?
Stained glass window for the church

7. What does Ronnie fight so hard to protect that brings her closer to Will?

Sea turtles nest in the back of her house.

8. What is your reaction to the book up to this point?
I like it, but I felt like it took too long. The entire chapter on Steve and telling us how he was raised - I feel like that could have completely been eliminated. I know some of it is foreshadowing, but I wouldn't have missed it by the end of the book, if N.S. would have left it out.

I was very happy when Ronnie and Will FINALLY kissed!

1. Why does Steve build a wall around the piano?

He builds the wall because Ronnie says she can't even stand to look at the piano...and I feel that he is trying so hard to get Ronnie to be happy because he loves and feels bad about what happened. (my opinion)

2. Why does Will fall for Ronnie?

He falls for her because she is different from all the girls he knows and she speaks her mind. He also likes that she is compassionate towards the turtles and the little boy.

3. Why does Ronnie fall for Will?

She falls for him because he is different from the guys she normally likes. She likes that he's real and doesn't try to be someone he's not.

4. Who causes tension between Will and Ronnie as their friendship/relationship starts to blossom?

Ashley, Will's ex jealousy is an ugly thing.

5. How can you characterize Blaze's relationship with Marcus?

She is completely dependent on him in a sickening way. He is manipulative and degrades her but she always comes back. She seems as though she can't see reason because he helped her out once.

6. What is Steve and Jonah working on in the shed all summer?

The stained glass window for the church that burned down.

7. What does Ronnie fight so hard to protect that brings her closer to Will?

She fights for the sea turtles that are in her backyard.

8. What is your reaction to the book up to this point?

So far I think that the book has gotten better since the first 5 chapters. I agree with the fact that the chapter on Steve wasn't really needed. It was boring and I enjoy reading about Ronnie and Will the most. I feel like something really bad is going to happen later in the book, just some of the things said seem like they are foreshadowing for something big. I'm interested to see if Blaze ever sees the light and turns her life around. Excited to see what everyone else has to say and see how the book turns out!

1. Steve builds the wall around the piano because he loves his daughter and is trying to show her that he loves her.
2. Will falls for Ronnie because she is tough outside and soft on the inside and she knows how to stand up for herself. She is different than any other girl he has dated.
3. Ronnie falls for will because she shares interests with him and finds him somehow different then most guys who live on the beach.
4. Ashley
5. Blaze feels alone in the world so she will do anything in her power to keep marcus around, even if that means doing everything he says.
6. Steve and Jonah are working on a stained glass window for Pastor Harris's church that is being rebuilt after burning to the ground.
7. The turtle nest
8. So far I absolutely love the book. Nicholas Sparks is one of my favorite authors. Ronnie is my favorite character and Jonah would have to be my second favorite so far.
