The Host: DQ #2

After reading the first five chapters of The Host, answer the following questions...

Melanie was on the verge of being caught by the alien race, so she attempted suicide. Do you think you would do the same in her scenario? Die free or live a slave?

If the Souls are suppose to be so peaceful and non-fighting, why do you think the Healer and the Seeker where arguing?

Do you think the souls are more human in their characteristics than they think they are? Why or why not?

Do you like the name the soul goes by and do you think souls should take new names on new planets?

What is so important about the soul Racing Song who changed his name to Kevin?

Why is the mental fight between Melanie and Wanderer so important when Wanderer almost emails the Seeker to say the email she sent was about a dream?

Why do you think Wanderer has a harder time controlling Melanie when she is overcome with emotions?

What job would you take if you were a soul? Comforter, Healer, or a Seeker?

Most important question: WHAT DO YOU THINK SO FAR? Easy to read or hard??

1. Melanie was on the verge of being caught by the alien race, so she attempted suicide. Do you think you would do the same in her scenario? Die free or live a slave?

I don't think that I would have the courage to kill myself so that I wouldn't be a slave, I think I would just try to fight from the inside like Melanie is doing. I value my life to much.

2. If the Souls are suppose to be so peaceful and non-fighting, why do you think the Healer and the Seeker where arguing?

I think that the Seekers are becoming corrupt, I think that the hosts that they live in are coming through a little.

3. Do you think the souls are more human in their characteristics than they think they are? Why or why not?

I think they are, because they show a lot of the human emotions such as competition (seekers), compassion (healers), and so on.

4. Do you like the name the soul goes by and do you think souls should take new names on new planets?

If you mean the name soul then I think they should be called parasites...If you mean that they take a name like wanderer then I think that's cool they should keep one name to identify themselves.

5. What is so important about the soul Racing Song who changed his name to Kevin?

It was important because that human managed to overtake/take back his body and the soul had to be removed.

6. Why is the mental fight between Melanie and Wanderer so important when Wanderer almost emails the Seeker to say the email she sent was about a dream?

It's showing that Melanie is extremely present and is gaining control quickly, plus she doesn't want her brother to be found and be implanted with a soul.

7. Why do you think Wanderer has a harder time controlling Melanie when she is overcome with emotions?

I think Wanderer doesn't know how to handle the emotions and is completely overcome by them so her control to fight off Melanie slips.

8. What job would you take if you were a soul? Comforter, Healer, or a Seeker?

I think that I would take Healer because they seem to show a lot of compassion more than the others.

9. Most important question: WHAT DO YOU THINK SO FAR? Easy to read or hard??

Well, so far it's getting a little better but I'm still not that interested in the book, I thought it would be a lot better than it is so far. I find this book very easy to read, sometimes so of the content seems a little jumbled but other than that I find it an easy read.

I would like to think that I would be that brave and willing to face death instead of give up my self to become a slave, but I'm not sure I could. If I had to be captured, I'd like to think I would be able to help the resistance from the inside.

If the Souls are suppose to be so peaceful and non-fighting, why do you think the Healer and the Seeker where arguing?

The Seeker's are violent for their race. The Healer's can sense this and do not like it. The Seeker's seem to be souls that take pleasure in the chase.

Do you think the souls are more human in their characteristics than they think they are? Why or why not?

Yes I do. I think they are similar to us, but on a much higher level. They have developed their own cast system of hierarchy and simply don't challenge authority, etc. I think the longer they are in the human bodies, the more human-like they become.

Do you like the name the soul goes by and do you think souls should take new names on new planets?

I think Wanderer is perfect for the soul because that's what she is. I think soul's take new names on the planets to help them fit in with that society and race.

What is so important about the soul Racing Song who changed his name to Kevin?

Kevin was the name of the host body and the person Racing Song occupied. He kept the name Kevin out of respect for him b/c Kevin learned to overpower Racing Song.

Why is the mental fight between Melanie and Wanderer so important when Wanderer almost emails the Seeker to say the email she sent was about a dream?

Melanie is growing stronger and not only making Wanderer question what she is doing in the host body, but Melanie is learning how to beat through Wanderer's mental blocks.

Why do you think Wanderer has a harder time controlling Melanie when she is overcome with emotions?

Emotions are new to this race. They are not used to all the feelings and when she does they make her vulnerable.

What job would you take if you were a soul? Comforter, Healer, or a Seeker?

Being that I have always wanted to be a doctor, I would say I would be a Healer.

Most important question: WHAT DO YOU THINK SO FAR? Easy to read or hard??

It's a very slow read, but I'm intrigued. I am waiting for the potential romance mentioned in the book jacket so to me it's less interesting.

1. I don't think I have it in me to attempt suicide. Or maybe I'd like to think that. I'm a pretty good fighter and would fight through it.

2. The Healer and Seeker have special and unique Callings opposed to other souls. Since their callings are kind of contradicting that could cause the non existence of peace between the two of them.

3. Souls inhabiting human bodies probably exude more human characteristics than they expect, just as the souls that inhabit a different type of body will exude that body's type of characteristics.

4. If I were a soul I'd probably keep one name the entire time. It'd be too confusing and I'm a simple soul.

5. Ummm, honestly I forget, but Kevin was a lesson learned for Wanderer, or for the Seeker, I forget. Something about the soul being taken over by the old owner of the body.

6. It was similar to the Kevin example.

7. Wanderer doesn't know how to handle her new found emotions.

8. Comforter

Most important question: WHAT DO YOU THINK SO FAR? Easy to read or hard?? I think it may be a little bit more harder to follow for me because I've been reading the book in spurts, sometimes stopping in the middle of the chapter, so its hard to pick up. It could also be due to the fact that I'm reading it on the iPod touch??? Not too sure!
