The Last Song: Chapter 23 - Epilogue

The month is coming to an end and so is our first book discussion. This was a lot of fun and the book was a fairly quick read for me. I can't wait to see what the next month has in store for us! Now on to the questions...

  1. Where did Ronnie get a job?
  2. Why was Ronnie supposed to appear in court?
  3. Will asks Ronnie how far she would go to protect a friend. Why does he do this? How far would YOU go to protect a friend?
  4. Why does Will let his mother control/guilt him into doing so much?
  5. Who did Ronnie recognize at Will's sister's wedding?
  6. What does Marcus do at the wedding to mess up things?
  7. Why does Ronnie get angry with Will towards the end of the novel?
  8. Do you think Ronnie over-reacted and should have broken up with Will over this?
  9. What has Steve been hiding from his kids?
  10. Why did Steve like to play the piano since moving to NC?
  11. Ronnie makes a huge decision towards the end of the novel. What was it? Could you have done it?
  12. What does Will do in the end of the novel that makes all of us sappy chicks happy?
  13. What was your overall reaction to the novel? Like or dislike
Hope you like the way I set these up - if you have suggestions feel free to let me know!

xoxo

1. Where did Ronnie get a job?
aquarium

2. Why was Ronnie supposed to appear in court?
shoplifting

3. Will asks Ronnie how far she would go to protect a friend. Why does he do this? How far would YOU go to protect a friend?
He believes he is protecting Scott. I have gone as far as to get in trouble for a friend, but never to the extent where the police were involved.

4. Why does Will let his mother control/guilt him into doing so much?
He was being loud/routy when they were little and they were driving and their mom wrecked, killing their baby brother. Scott saved them.

5. Who did Ronnie recognize at Will's sister's wedding?
Her judge

6. What does Marcus do at the wedding to mess up things?
Set up Will to attack him at the right location so that Marcus & Will fell into the tent causing it to collapse.

7. Why does Ronnie get angry with Will towards the end of the novel?
He admitted to her what he has been lying for Scott about.

8. Do you think Ronnie over-reacted and should have broken up with Will over this?
I think Ronnie has strong beliefs and the fact that she feels that strongly towards the way he lied and refused to go to the police, stands to show you her character. I think she could have forgiven him and called him, but was too stubborn.

9. What has Steve been hiding from his kids?
He has cancer

10. Why did Steve like to play the piano since moving to NC?
It helped ease the pain from the cancer.

11. Ronnie makes a huge decision towards the end of the novel. What was it? Could you have done it?
She decides to not go back to NYC, but to stay with her dad. Yes, I think I could do it if I were in her shoes, b/c she had nothing to do when she got back.

12. What does Will do in the end of the novel that makes all of us sappy chicks happy?
Found her in NYC and apologized. They professed their love and he transferred schools. Happily Ever After :)

13. What was your overall reaction to the novel? Like or dislike
I knew from reading the back of the book that someone was going to die from cancer. I liked the novel overall and liked the way N.S. changed perspectives.

I didn't read this book. I had gone through a similar situation a year ago that Ronnie had. My Dad had squamous cell carcinoma for 2 1/2 years or so The last 15 months before he passed on, he was diagnosed terminal. I usually don't like to ruin stories I haven't read/saw in the movies, but my best friend thought she'd give me fair warning, just cause of my situation. I'm glad. I BALLED in My Sister's Keeper, and it wasn't even a similar situation, so imagine what I would have been like to watch/read this story.

Anyhow, I came home from college over the summer and made the choice to stay home and continue school at home and take care of my Dad instead of continuing at my 1st choice college in Portland, Oregon. I would not have wanted anyone else to take care of him other than myself. Not that anyone would have. It was such an honor to give back to him after everything he had done for me for those 22 years of my life. I love and appreciate him everyday and always wish I could have been a better caretaker for him and helped eased his pain a little more.

1. Where did Ronnie get a job?

At the Aquarium.

2. Why was Ronnie supposed to appear in court?

For this case it was because she was accused of shoplifting, even though she didn't do it.

3. Will asks Ronnie how far she would go to protect a friend. Why does he do this? How far would YOU go to protect a friend?

He believes he owes Scott because he saved him and his mom. It depends on my friend. I have never really had to get in trouble because of a friend so I don't know.

4. Why does Will let his mother control/guilt him into doing so much?

He feels guilty for what happened to his brother.

5. Who did Ronnie recognize at Will's sister's wedding?

The Judge

6. What does Marcus do at the wedding to mess up things?

He made it so that Will would tackle him and the tent fell down. Which strangely enough Ronnie got blamed for.

7. Why does Ronnie get angry with Will towards the end of the novel?

Because she finds out that he has been lying for Scott and didn't tell her for so long or the police.

8. Do you think Ronnie over-reacted and should have broken up with Will over this?

I can see why she got so mad, but on the other hand she was dealing with a lot so it probably was more intensified then she had planned.

9. What has Steve been hiding from his kids?

That he has terminal cancer.

10. Why did Steve like to play the piano since moving to NC?

Playing the piano made him feel better.

11. Ronnie makes a huge decision towards the end of the novel. What was it? Could you have done it?

She decides to stay with her dad while he is dying and takes care of him. I would like to think that I would do that also, but it would be very hard thing to do. I admire anyone who could do that.

12. What does Will do in the end of the novel that makes all of us sappy chicks happy?

Moves to New York to go to college and is near Ronnie

13. What was your overall reaction to the novel? Like or dislike

I did like this book but it was really sad. It was not what I thought it would be but that's not a bad thing. It was good I would recommend other people to read it.

*Side Note: to Kelegirl6 I think what you did for your dad is so admirable. It must have been very hard to do but you did it anyway. *

*Comments on the blog: I enjoyed reading the book and answering the questions. However for the next book I would not make the questions cover such large chunks of the book. Maybe having more questions on a couple chapters at a time more often would be better. Otherwise...I like it!
